Flagstone is a general term given to sedimentary rock, which are frequently used in paving and landscaping. What is a Flagstone Pathway?
Flagstone is also derived of from limestone or quartz stone as a common a sandstone mix. The thickness varies, and usually ranges from a half an inch to about two inches. Beige, brown, red, and pink colors as well as green, blue or white are the typical colors found in flagstone. Due to their strength, they don’t need the type of soil base concrete pavers require, which allows for easy installation. With a natural look and rich color, flagstone is a top option to help beautify a landscape. Compared to denser stones, flagstone is durable and comes with less maintenance. Flagstone can be easily protected and kept even longer as it can be sealed.
How Do You Install Flagstone Paths & Steps etc
For a DIY flagstone pathway installation, below are a few steps. However, professional installation is the best solution, especially if you want a more intricate design and high-quality workmanship.
1) Excavate the Future Pathway. To form the pathway, remove all the old landscaping materials, rocks, and debris with a rake.
2) Pathway Plot. Mark the inside of the planned pathway with a bright spray paint.
3) Installation of the Border. Prepare the area with trenching out about 2 inches into the ground using a shovel or hoe along the outer edges of the painted lines. By using a hammer and border takes, secure the vinyl garden border in place. Backfill with dirt as needed. Over time, keep your finished pathway intact avoid washouts during heavy rains with the help of the border.
4) Add a Weed Block. Roll out the weed block over the pathway. After your stake down the loose edges, trim the excess with scissors.
5) Level It Out. With the weed block material and spread the sand out a few inches, make sure to keep it somewhat level. For better drainage and compact the sand down, make the middle of the pathway a tad higher than the sides.
6) Flagstone Installation. Dry fit the flagstones allowing 1-3 inches in between them if you have a preferred pattern. Until they do not move when they are stepped on, use the larger stones first and nestle into the sand. With the smaller stones or a hammer to break up the larger pieces, fill in the gaps.
7) Add Pebbles. After the flagstone is in place, spread the pebbles out and sweep them into the gaps using a wide broom.
Maximize the water absorption and better secure the stones over time this will help create a unique texture.
