When you’re planning your landscape design, there are a lot of things to think about. You want diversity when it comes to your plants, trees and shrubs. You want to make sure that those plants are going to be blossoming at different times so that you have beauty around the calendar year. One season that is often overlooked is the winter season. You want to make sure that you still have interest in your landscape during the winter months. Mickey’s LawnScapes is here to share some different ways that you can add winter interest to your landscape.
Perennials & Ornamental Grasses
There are several perennials and grasses that will continue to look lovely clear into late fall and even the first snow storms of the year. Not only can these plants add beauty to your landscape when the growing season has come to an end, but they are also a great source of food for the birds and wildlife in your yard. Some great perennial plants that will stay in your yard clear into late fall and early winter include tall sedum, black eyed Susan’s and purple coneflowers. Ornamental grasses that are a great addition to your landscape are maiden grass, switchgrass, and prairie drop seed.
Deciduous Trees & Shrubs
You can also find deciduous trees and shrubs that have a lot to offer in the late fall and winter seasons. Some of them might have a striking bark color, fruit, or textures that are appealing when the world is in a state or dormancy. For instance, there are crabapple trees like prairifire, sugar thyme and red jewel that will keep berries on them throughout the winter months. Winterberry is a deciduous holly that will have yellow leaves and red berries throughout the winter. Trees like river birch and paperbark maple have interesting bark that is mottled and colorful throughout the winter as well.
Evergreen Trees & Shrubs
If you don’t want your yard to look bare during the winter season, you might want to consider planting some evergreen trees and shrubs to keep some green color in your beds and in your yard. You can choose shrubs like boxwoods that will keep their green or variegated leaves on them throughout the year. There are several different pine species that can add beauty to your landscape as well. There are even some evergreens that have a yellowish color to them if you are looking for something other than dark green too.
